Willy Twiston-Davies enjoyed a red-letter day as Primitivo gave him a first Royal Ascot success in the King George V Stakes.

Twiston-Davies' family are steeped in the National Hunt sphere, with Gold Cup and Grand National-winning trainer father Nigel and leading jockey brother Sam renowned names, but now the younger Twiston-Davies has scored a family first.

Trained by Alan King, who was also enjoying an inaugural victory at the Royal meeting, Primitivo came full of running well over a furlong out.

Twiston-Davies seized the initiative and pushed for home but Primitivo started to drift towards the stands rail as Platitude wound up to challenge on the far side.

However, Primitivo (13-2) had plenty left in the tank and won in style, with Twiston-Davies standing in his irons to salute the crowd as he passed the post.

The winning rider received a huge welcome and said: "I can't believe it. All I can do is thank Alan King and the owner. I'm delighted. It's brilliant I can finally deliver on the big stage. I might start crying in a minute!"

King added: "I love this place and I love my Flat racing. It's very special. It's been an ambition of mine to have a winner at Royal Ascot. I adore the place. I've been coming for the best part of 30 years.

"We've not had many runners. We were second in this race with Salsalino and I thought we'll come back one day and never quite believed it.

"We've had some awfully big offers for this horse, but we turned them down to come here."
