Putapoundinthejar benefits from patient Harnett ride Putapoundinthejar came from off the pace to defy top-weight in the Paddy Woods Memorial Apprentice Handicap. Better known for his exploits over flights, the Tony Martin-trained six-year-old was sent off a 5/1 chance (12s early) this evening and after breaking slowly, soon found himself towards rear. Making steady headway on the outer with half-a-mile to go, the Ray Grehan-owned bay improved to dispute the lead over a furlong from home and after a good tussle with Superficial, there was half-a-length between them at the line. The Andrew McNamara-trained runner-up was returned at 10/1 under Jimmy Dalton, with the front pair drawing 11-lengths clear of Obscenity in third, with this one the 7/4 favourite from early shows of 4/1. "He did it well - we went good and hard and it suited him down to the ground. He liked that ground as well," winning rider Joseph Harnett reflected. "I broke kind of slow, but they went plenty hard and I got to take my time and see what happened which was the plan. "It is riding a lot nicer wider. He dug deep, nice and hardy to the line. "He'll be a nice horse up in trip again and maybe over hurdles. "I was delighted when I saw the declarations and I was on him - thanks to the lads and Tony for putting me up. "First winner this year, and it is nice to get on the board nice and early. Hopefully, we can kick on now." Additional reporting by Michael Graham
