Quick turnaround suits Amrum well Well-bred Amrum surged home to get up in the final stride of division 2 of the Ladies Day July 25th Handicap in Gowran Park. The son of Frankel couldn't be called the winner as he raced in rear on the approach to the straight. He straightened up widest of all and still had plenty to do in the final quarter of a mile. Neon Eyes had gone for home a furlong out, but Frankel colt Amrum, on handicap debut, ran on strongly inside the final furlong to mow her down. The winner was returned the 3/1 favourite and pipped Neon Eyes (6/1) by a head with Zitkala Sa more than three lengths away in third at 40/1. Colin Keane said: “He’s bred to be a lot better than he is, but he’s a grand type of horse - a good-looking horse. “The handicapper has given him a chance, so hopefully now he can climb through the grades. It’s nice to get that done. “He was slow away the other evening in Down Royal (on Friday, sixth) and he seemed to come out of it very well so the boss raced him back, so it worked out well. “I’d say he’s crying out to go up in trip, I’d say that’s the biggest problem. He’s a horse that will go a mile-and-a-half no problem.” Additional reporting by Gary Carson
