Rock surprise Nunthorpe entry

Rock Of Gibraltar was a surprise name among the 37 entries revealed today for next month`s Victor Chandler Nunthorpe Stakes.

The five-time Group One winner has raced solely over a mile this season, winning the Sagitta 2000 Guineas, Entenmann`s Irish 2000 Guineas and St James`s Palace Stakes, and is set to stay at that trip for his next outing in the Sussex Stakes.

Yet he is among nine horses trainer Aidan O`Brien has put in the five-furlong York contest - which he has won with Stravinsky and Mozart in recent years.

Stable-companions engaged include Coronation Stakes winner Sophisticat and last year`s champion juvenile Johannesburg, who has been under a cloud since his poor run behind Malhub in the Golden Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Each of the first five home in the Jubilee has been entered, along with King`s Stand Stakes winner Dominica and 2000 Guineas fourth Zipping.

O`Brien also has a strong hand in the two other Group One contests at York`s Ebor meeting, for which entries were also published today.

Rock Of Gibraltar himself is among a team of 21 in the Juddmonte International Stakes, along with Hawk Wing, High Chaparral and Quarter Moon.

And the last-named tops a seven-strong squad for the Aston Upthorpe Yorkshire Oaks.
