Roicead drops back in trip to score

Roicead made his first start at the minimum trip a winning one when claiming the Dan Dooley Handicap at Tipperary.

Brendan Duke's charge raced prominently on the stand's side before hitting the front with over two furlongs to run.

Willie Supple had a job keeping his mount straight as he drifted left inside the final furlong but he had plenty in hand.

The Giant's Causeway gelding, 9/2 second choice in the market, kept on well for a two-length success over 4/1 favourite The Reaper.

"He was 100 per cent ready today. He's a cracking horse to have in the yard," said Duke.

"He's rapidly improving but we'll be very careful with him for the rest of the season. He may go to Doncaster for the Portland Handicap on Leger day.

"He could step up to Group level next season."
