The Gordon Elliott-trained Scalpnagoon gained a breakthrough win over fences when staying on well under Sam Ewing to land the Jim And Kay Whitty Memorial Handicap Chase at Wexford.

Twice successful over flights, the six-year-old had failed to get his head in front in 10 previous attempts over fences.

Sent off 16/1, the gelding tracked the leaders throughout before being produced to challenge approaching two out.

Holding every chance at the last, Scalpnagoon showed plenty of determination on the run-in and led in the final strides to foil Kobalt St Georges by a head.

Assistant trainer Ian 'Busty' Amond, said: "He always runs his race, so it's grand he's got his head in front. Sam (Ewing) said he jumped great and travelled well. He was due one, probably."
