Successful at Limerick in April, Silent Selector bounced back to form in the Waterford Castle Resort Style Evening Handicap Hurdle.

Failing to complete in three outings since that Greenmount Park triumph, the Ger O'Leary-trained five-year-old was sent off an 18/1 chance today.

In front for much of this extended two-and-a-half mile heat under Sean Flanagan, the 96-rated bay was joined by Inchidaly Copper before two out, but regained an outright advantage over the last and kept on best from there to beat his aforementioned rival by a head.

The runner-up was returned the 5/1 favourite (from 11s early) under Andy Burke-Ott for his father Alex, while General Clermont (10/1) and Perfectway (12/1) were third and fourth respectively.

"I was a bit baffled after his last couple of runs, but I suppose he was back down in grade today," Cork based O'Leary reflected.

"I ran him in a couple of higher graded races and I thought he'd be good enough for them, but it probably proved otherwise today coming back down to the 0-100 grade.

"He just got caught behind the tapes the last day. He charged at them the first time around and caused a false start. If he had hit the tapes right, he could have won last week. He did it today anyway and we're delighted.

"Coming here, I said win loose or draw he'll get a break after today. That was in my head coming down and I won't make any other decisions yet. We'll see, he is in now a long time.

"I only have the two racing and they own me nothing at this stage. It would be great to get more horses, that's the aim really, to try and push on.

"I have a few lovely horses for the autumn, a couple of young horses coming through. Hopefully we'll be able to push on."
