Shareta got the better of a sustained battle with The Fugue in the Darley Yorkshire Oaks.

Alain de Royer-Dupre's mare had finished second in the Prix de L'Arc De Triomphe but the daughter of Sinndar was not to be denied as she demonstrated plenty of resolution to wrestle the spoils from John Godsen's Musidora heroine.

Despite the driving rain, Lemaire was content to have his horse prominent from the gate and she shared the early exchanges with Epsom Oaks winner, Was.

Seamie Heffernan attempted to inject pace as they turned in but Lemaire refused to panic as he sat on the leaders' tail while The Fugue began to make her move down the centre of the track.

As Shirocco Star, Bible Belt and Coquet dropped out of the contention, the market leaders set down to fight out the finish and though The Fugue looked to have all the momentum under Buick, the French mare raced limpet like to the rail to claim her first ever Group 1 prize.

A delighted De Royer-Dupre said: "We came because the filly was in very good condition and because this is a marvellous track.

"I know she stays. Many times in France the straight is much too short and she doesn't have time to show what she can do.

"Today she could continue, continue, she was very strong.

"We have the Prix Vermeille to think of (rather than the Arc) - that is just for fillies. Sometimes the Arc is run on very soft ground and she doesn't like it too soft."

John Gosden said of The Fugue: "She ran a great race. The winner is a very good filly and there aren't really any excuses.

"I think she prefers quicker ground and she'll be aimed towards the Breeders' Cup where we know she'll get that."
