Smullen To Ride In Cheltenham Bumper

Pat Smullen, twice Irish Flat Champion Jockey, will have his first ride at the Cheltenham Festival next week when he will partner the Dermot Weld-trained Govamix in the Weatherbys Champion Bumper.

Weld`s stable jockey rode him in a gallop after racing at Leopardstown on Sunday and will try and follow in the footsteps of fellow Flat jockey Jamie Spencer who rode Pizarro to victory in the race last year.

Smulen said: 'He will be my first ride at Cheltenham and riding there is something I've always wanted to do. It will be a great experience and Govamix is a worthy horse to go there.'

It was a big weekend off the track for Smullen and his wife, trainer Frances Crowley who gave birth to a daughter, Hannah, on Saturday morning.
