There will be no racing in Britain today as both Carlisle and Ffos Las were forced to abandon.

Carlisle's meeting had been in some doubt with an 8am inspection called due to forecast snow but as soon as officials arrived at the Cumbrian venue shortly after 6am they were able to take an early decision.

A tweet from the track, accompanied by a picture of a very wintry scene, read: "Sadly we have had to abandon today's race meeting due to the snow! Tickets will be refunded automatically. Please call the office if you have any questions."

The situation was no better at Ffos Las, who were not even due to inspect.

A tweet from the track's official account said: "The Clerk of the course has done an early inspection & due to adverse weather conditions racing has been abandoned. All racegoers will be contacted today."

An early decision has also been made ahead of Monday's scheduled National Hunt meeting at Southwell which has also been called off to due to heavy snow.

They tweeted: "Racing here tomorrow has been abandoned due to snow. There is currently 4 inches of snow on the track."

Kelso's meeting on Monday must pass a 2pm inspection on Sunday as that also has a covering of snow.

Clerk of the course Anthea Morshead said: "Snow overnight @KelsoRacecourse Temperature currently on 0deg, due to rise to 2 deg at noon, & 5 deg by noon Monday. No frost in ground before snow arrived & going Heavy. Inspection 2pm Sunday."
