Step up in trip or drop in class next for Dream

Trainer Henry de Bromhead feels the trip may have proven too short for Chris's Dream in the John Durkan Chase at Punchestown on Sunday.

The Mahler gelding finished a well-beaten fifth behind Min in the two-and-a-half mile Grade One contest.

Despite having won over the same trip in the Red Mills Chase last season de Bromhead felt he struggled against top class rivals at the distance.

Chris's Dream had been narrowly denied in the three-mile Ladbrokes Champion Chase at Down Royal on his comeback run.

A step back up in trip or a drop in grade could now be on the cards for the eight-year-old.

“He seems fine. I thought a drop back in trip would suit him but I was probably wrong to be honest,” said de Bromhead.

“Maybe he needs three miles, I'm not really sure but I wouldn't be rushing to go back to two-and-a-half in that grade.

“I thought after the north that it would suit him but he seemed to struggle over the trip and I'd say we'll go back up now.

“Saying all that we could look at the Red Mills Chase again, which he won last year. Even though that is two-and-a-half, dropping back in grade is maybe the realistic thing to do.

“We could drop back to a Grade 2 and see.”
