He had returned to winning form in Ireland on his penultimate start after a disappointing start to the season, but Appleby will be heading to Keeneland with optimism having chosen to bypass Champions Day. He ran well to a point at Haydock, but he doesn’t like soft ground. For him to finish third was a good run. “You can get results like that with them strung out when the ground is like that. Had it been better I think we’d have gone very close. “He won’t run before the Breeders’ Cup, he’ll go straight there. “The way Paul (Teasdale, owner) was talking at the weekend it looks like he might be coming back next year too which is great.”
