Gavin Cromwell's staying chaser Stumptown is set to take his chance in the £250,000 Coral Gold Cup Handicap Chase over an extended 3m1f at Newbury on Saturday.

The six-year-old gelding, who was notably just pipped by a neck in the Kim Muir at this year's Cheltenham Festival, was last seen finishing mid-division in the Kerry National at Listowel in September.

“He’s going to go and hopefully Ahoy Senor will run and keep the weights as they are (Stumptown set to carry 10st2lb in the initial weights)," the trainer said.

“His jumping has let him down and those fences in Listowel can do that with a horse and get sucked into the bottom of them. The English fences probably suit him a bit better.

“He was running a good race in Listowel until making a mistake about four out and he still wasn’t beaten that far.

“He’s in great nick, I’m happy with him.”

Stumptown landed a handicap chase over an extended three miles at Sandown in February.

He is currently available at 16/1 with the sponsors.
