Sussex Stakes next for Kingman Kingman is likely to take on older horses for the first time in the Qipco Sussex Stakes at Glorious Goodwood on July 30. The John Gosden-trained colt has proved himself the pick of the three-year-old generation with victories in the Irish 2,000 Guineas and the St James's Palace Stakes, and will mix it with his elders now. The Queen Elizabeth II Stakes back at Ascot on Champions Day, October 18, is the long-term objective for the Khalid Abdullah-owned star. "We would certainly look at the Sussex and that would be his next possible race he could go for," Teddy Grimthorpe, Abdullah's racing manager, said. "If by chance he missed that for any reason then we'd also be looking at the Jacques le Marois. He could do both, of course. If it came to a call between one and the other we'd have to weigh up everything. "It wouldn't be a question of avoiding anything, it would be trying to do what's best for the horse and I would think John (Gosden) and Prince Khalid would have the QEII at the end of the year in mind. "It's a question of working back from there and trying to get it all right." Kingman has an entry in the Darley July Cup at Newmarket but Grimthorpe explained that is purely a safeguard and is now extremely unlikely. "We did give him a July Cup entry before he went to Ireland, just as a precaution, just in case we'd got it a bit wrong. He is closely related to Oasis Dream (July Cup winner for connections in 2003), but is a slightly different horse and his mother was a miler," he said. "I think we will probably shelve that for the time being now that he has proved himself at the highest class at a mile."
