Sweeney suspended following late withdrawal The following is a report into the withdrawal of Crouching Harry in the Apprentice Handicap, which resulted in the seven day ban of Darragh Sweeney: The Stewards received a request from an authorised representative of Mr PD Deegan, trainer, to withdraw Crouching Harry from this race, because the nominated rider, DM Sweeney could not weigh out at the correct weight, and there was no available rider at the track who could draw the correct weight and was qualified to ride in this race. Evidence was heard from Mr Paul Coyle, authorised representative and DM Sweeney. Mr Coyle stated that the trainer was given an undertaking that the rider would ride at the correct weight, and so was not prepared for his charge to carry 3lbs overweight. DM Sweeney stated that Mr Dave Keena, riders agent informed him of the availability of this spare ride, and that Mr Keena helped secure this ride and has helped him secure rides in the past. He stated that he gave an undertaking that he would ride at the correct weight, needing to lose approx 5lbs to do so, and even though he tried, he was showing 3lbs overweight at scales. Having considered all the evidence, the Stewards allowed the withdrawal but were of the opinion DM Sweeney was in breach of Rule 195 (i) in that failed to weigh out at the correct weight and they suspended him for 7 racedays. Furthermore they referred the matter onto the Chief Executive of the Turf Club for further investigation regarding the role of an agent in booking rides for a 10lb claiming apprentice. Also, the Stewards advised DM Sweeney to seek advice from Dr Adrian McGoldrick, Turf Club Medical Officer on his diet and weight management and to establish the minimum weight for which he could safely accept rides.
