Tapwrit wins Belmont Stakes Tapwrit wore down Irish War Cry to win the Belmont Stakes for Todd Pletcher. Having already won the Kentucky Derby with Always Dreaming, Pletcher achieved the unusual feat of winning two legs of the Triple Crown with different horses. Having tracked Irish War Cry for much of the race, Jose Ortiz, winning his first Triple Crown race, angled out his mount to challenge in the straight, eventually pulling two lengths clear of the favourite. "Tapwrit was getting a beautiful trip," Pletcher told www.bloodhorse.com. "It was everything we talked about in the paddock before the race. We were hoping he had enough when it came to crunch time. "It looked like Irish War Cry still had something left, but the last sixteenth, he dug down deep." Pletcher will now turn his attentions to Royal Ascot where he is due to run American Patriot in the Queen Anne Stakes.
