Richard Hughes proved a super-sub as The Fugue showed a startling turn of foot to win the Markel Insurance Nassau Stakes at Glorious Goodwood.

With William Buick preferring stablemate and favourite Izzi Top, John Gosden moved to secure the services of Hughes who was always sitting pretty aboard the 11-4 winner.

Timepiece (16-1) made a bold bid from the front and was still a length in front entering the final furlong.

However The Fugue had her covered and quickened to the front 150 yards out for a length success.

Was (11-2) ran a gallant race in third with Izzi Top weakening when short of room at the furlong pole and Nahrain again disappointing, eventually finishing last.

Hughes said: "That's what you call a good spare ride. She's a beautiful filly and she floats across the ground.

"The more I pulled her back, the more she wanted to go - she was like an elastic band ready to quicken. The ones I had to beat were no more than three lengths in front of me, so I didn't have to worry.

"I feel sorry for William (Buick) as it's very hard to choose between these fillies, but she was very good today."
