Sandy Thomson feels Seeyouatmidnight may find life tough next season after he ran a tremendous race in defeat when third in the Coral Scottish Grand National at Ayr on Saturday.

Thomson expects his eight-year-old to be rated in the 150s after he was just touched off for second place by Alvarado in the valuable long-distance handicap chase won by Vicente.

Any rise on top of that next season would, according to the Berwickshire trainer, make it extremely difficult for him to win a big handicap.

Equally, Seeyouatmidnight might be not quite good enough to compete with the best chasers in Graded races at level weights.

"We were absolutely delighted," said Thomson.

"He's run a hell of a race. He's given quite a lot of weight to just about all the field. It's just a shame he got pipped on the line for second.

"He's quite weary, but he's fine. He's out in the field and that will be him done for the season.

"It's not going to be easy. He'll be rated about 150. It's just finding the right race and the season will be geared to running when the ground is softer.

"It could be very difficult. Whether he's quite good enough to run on level weights, I don't know.

"If he wins a race and goes up to 160 it would be nigh near impossible to win a race like the National.

"There's not many do it in the high 150s. We'll have to wait and see.

"We'll have to go down the handicap route and we'll always be up against the handicapper.

"We were thrilled with him and it was a big call giving Steven (Fox) the ride and he's done a great job. It's difficult for these boys just to get rides."
