Horse Racing Ireland (HRI) today announced the appointment of Tim Higgins as chief executive of Tote Ireland, Horse Racing Ireland’s pool-betting subsidiary.

Mr Higgins will join the Tote in September from Microsoft Ireland where he most recently held the post of IT Director for European Operations and Development.

He has held a number of senior management positions with Microsoft over the past 15 years, including international assignments in Asia and North America.

A chartered accountant, he has a successful track record in strategic planning, operations and team leadership.

A successful racehorse owner with a life-long interest in thoroughbred racing and breeding, he is a regular race-goer at home and abroad.

Welcoming the appointment Brian Kavanagh, CEO of HRI, said: “Tim brings a set of skills and experience which will be invaluable to the future development of the Tote.

"Betting is increasingly an online and mobile experience and advanced understanding of IT and its business applications are fundamental to the future of our business.

"His overall commercial leadership skills, global business perspective and love for horse racing will match our ambitions for the long-term development of the Tote for the benefit of Irish racing.”

Tim Higgins said: “The Tote is, and always will be, an integral a part of Irish racing. I am incredibly positive on the opportunities to grow the business in the coming years. I look forward to working with all parties to create a future founded on providing value and service to our loyal customers both on and off course.”
