Top Cat Up For Eclipse Honours

Unbeaten Godolphin colt Discreet Cat will go head-to-head with American giants Barbaro and Bernardini in the prestigious Eclipse Awards on January 22.

The Saeed bin Suroor-trained son of Forestry won each of his five starts in 2006, culminating in a Grade One success in the Cigar Mile at Aqueduct in November.

But he faces a stiff task to get the champion three-year-old male title ahead of his two rivals, although he has also been nominated in the champion sprinter category.

Kentucky Derby hero Barbaro had his career cut short when suffering a serious injury in the Preakness Stakes next time out, a race which went to the Sheikh Mohammed-owned Bernardini.

The latter also won two other Grade One events, but had to settle for second to Sheikh Hamdan's Invasor ? one of the three nominees for top older male ? in the Breeders' Cup Classic.

The Ed Dunlop-trained Ouija Board, who regained her Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf crown at Churchill Downs in November, is nominated in the female turf horse category, which she won two years ago.

The awards are named in honour of the great 18th century racehorse and sire Eclipse, with the results to be announced at a ceremony in Beverley Hills, California.
