Tornado Alert is closing in on a return to action, with a second trip to Germany very much on the cards.

Saeed bin Suroor’s charge mixed it with the best of his generation as a three-year-old last season, finishing fourth in the 2000 Guineas and sixth in Derby before filling the runner-up spot in the Hampton Court Stakes at Royal Ascot.

He went one better when claiming Group One glory in the Grosser Dallmayr-Preis – Bayerisches Zuchtrennen 12 months ago – beating a subsequent Royal Ascot winner in Map Of Stars – but a subsequent setback has ruled him out of action since.

The son of Too Darn Hot is on the comeback trail, however, and while a defence of his crown in Munich may come too soon, bin Suroor is eyeing up another top-level prize on German soil won last season by fellow Godolphin star Rebel’s Romance.

“He worked two days ago, he’s doing well and in good form,” said the trainer.

“The plan is to take him to Germany. He’s entered in the race he won last year, but at the same time it is probably more likely we will run him at Hoppegarten on August 9 over a mile and a half (Grosser Preis von Berlin).

“He’s entered in the mile and a quarter race again, but I think at the moment he’ll need another two pieces of work to put him spot on.”

Reflecting on his lengthy absence, bin Suroor added: “He had a setback after he won in Germany last year, nothing major but we looked after him and we’re looking forward to running him again.

“After Germany we look at the options for him, maybe we’ll look at the Canadian International and other races abroad.”
