Trabolgan On Target For Newbury

Trabolgan delighted trainer Nicky Henderson in his work ahead of Saturday´s Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup at Newbury.

The seven-year-old is set to make his seasonal bow in the ultra-competitive handicap and he is the 4-1 favourite with William Hill on the strength of his win in the Royal & SunAlliance Novices´ Chase at Cheltenham in March.

Henderson has a wide range of facilities at his Seven Barrows base and he was able to work his big-race contender on Sunday morning despite a sharp overnight frost.

He said: 'I took him to a new strip of ground on which the grass was like a carpet and he worked on it. Mick Fitzgerald rode him and he went beautifully.'

Although Trabolgan has won on ground ranging from good to heavy, Henderson believes he is better on a sound surface and has welcomed a dry forecast for the week ahead.

He added: 'Although it is expected to be milder, there doesn´t seem to be any rain on the way and that´s not a bother as we know Trabolgan doesn´t really go in heavy ground.'
