Valets To Meet With HRI Over Future Saturday Evening Fixtures

Future Saturday evening fixtures could be thrown into disarray after valet Dave Fox warned that he and his staff would not work unless their demands are met by HRI at a meeting next Wednesday.

Fox, speaking before racing at Cork on Saturday evening, said: “I thought of not providing a full service today but I decided I should work normally for the sake of goodwill towards the industry.

“This is also because we have a meeting with Brian Kavanagh at HRI to discuss the matter on Wednesday. However, if this does not result in us getting the extra money we are looking for, we will serve notice that we will work at no more Saturday evening fixtures.”

The valets were not consulted about the increased number of Saturday evening fixtures this year and the Euro130 payment they received for last years meetings have not been paid this year.

They did receive payment from Kilbeggan last month but it has not been paid since.

However, a report prepared by union official and HRI board member Eddie Browne indicates that the present talks between HRI and the jockeys will result in increased riding fees.

This would result in more money for the valets and could resolve the dispute.
