Smackwater Jack showed there is still plenty of fire in the belly at the age of 12 when rallying gamely to land the TRM Supporting Every Stride Of The Journey Handicap Hurdle at Punchestown.

The Denise Foster-trained veteran, who gained his only previous win for connections over this course and distance, made most of the running but was headed at the last by Jackmoon

However, the 22/1 shot dug deep on the run-in for Ethan O’Sullivan to beat the staying on Morell River by a neck with Jackmoon the same distance further back in third.

The placings were confirmed following a stewards enquiry.

O’Sullivan said, “He battled strongly. He's a fair old horse for 12. I'd be delighted with him; he's a hardy horse.

“He battled on very well and I'd be very happy with him."
