Ward on cloud nine

Vincent Ward is still "on cloud nine" thanks to a fairytale victory with Fictional Account at Ascot on Sunday.

The sheep farmer and permit holder from County Meath admits he has not yet come to terms with the success of the five-year-old mare in the Listed Fenwolf Stakes.

"I'm on cloud nine and it hasn't sunk in yet," said Ward.

"It's a lifetime achievement and I think people appreciate the small man and we probably showed our emotions more. It is a day I will cherish for the rest of my life in racing - you dream about days like that.

"I haven't too many horses and to get a winner over there is a fairytale. It's back to basics here, but we'll be going back there again.

"The horse has been out in the paddock with her pony comrade. She's having a rest now and won't be back in training until January. We thought we'd try to finish third or fourth with her and get some black type.

"We won't make any decisions until next year. She's an improving mare so God knows what could come next. All our horses are cast-offs who have been in other yards. To get them and then achieve something else with them is fantastic."
