The Andrew McNamara-trained Warriors Wood (7/2JF) was victorious in an exciting handicap chase at Kilbeggan for jockey Brian Hayes, who has enjoyed a positive start to the new season in Ireland.

It was a race that included plenty of drama, with horses running out in the middle part of the race. It looked like the Henry de Bromhead-trained Trasna Na Pairce (7/2 JF) was set to land the contest, but a mistake after jumping the last allowed Hayes and Warriors Wood to clean up the pieces and record a 7-length victory.

Speaking after the race, jockey Brian Hayes said:

“He’s won a few over hurdles and now he’s added to that over fences,” said Hayes.

“He had the form from the last day to do that today.”

On the trouble at the fifth fence he added: “It actually helped me as I avoided it all, and I landed upsides front.

“I got plenty of breathers into my horse and from there on it was straightforward.

“I thought Darragh was giving me a race turning for home but I got a good jump at the last.

“I was hopeful I’d outstay him. My horse really hit the line hard the last day against a good yardstick in Mick Winters’ mare (Shellrunforbriggs). I’d say she’s a good mare.

“I was hoping my lad would finish out just as well today.”
