Maverick Wave showed plenty of guts to hold on and win the Betfair Huxley Stakes at Chester.

William Buick set off at a good clip on John Gosden's 4-1 chance, before stacking up his rivals down the back straight.

Ryan Moore seemed to have every move covered on the 6-4 favourite Cannock Chase, however, and with Air Pilot seemingly not totally at ease around the tight circuit, punters looked set to collect on the market leader.

For a few strides Cannock Chase got in front, but Maverick Wave battled back to win by half a length, with Air Pilot eventually staying on well to claim third.

Buick said: "He's great this horse, John said to get out in front and he'll keep finding.

"He's very tough and we've always thought a bit of him, he's finally getting his act together.

"The ground suited him and the track suits him, too.

"This is his trip."
