Wild Bill Hickok upsets short priced jolly Wild Bill Hickok caused something of a minor upset when proving far too good for odds-on market leader Workahead in the McGowan Accountancy Services Novice Chase at Roscommon. Tracking the race favourite in the early part of proceeding, the Ciaran Murphy trained 9/2 chance closed into second entering the home straight. Getting to the front after jumping two out, the Patrick Sheanon owned gelding kept on well under Eoghan Finegan to win by four-and-three-quarter lengths. The winner was reversing form with the runner-up who had beat him easily when they clashed at Wexford last month. “We bought him to do this job, a four-year-old chaser — that was the idea,” said Murphy. “He’s won two now and we’re over the moon with him. A bit of juice in the ground today, I’d say, helped him. “It was as quick as he wanted it both times in Wexford but we felt the second time we had to run him for experience. “He freshened up since that and we were very happy with him coming today. “Obviously we didn’t think we’d beat the favourite, and turn that form around, but we knew with juice in the ground he’d get closer. We’re very happy with that. “The idea was always the Grade 3 novice in Galway and he has lots of experience now going there. We’ll let him freshen up and if we’re happy with him that’s where we’ll go.” Quotes by Gary Carson.
