A Classic and a Chester clean sweep - what's next for Aidan O'Brien's superstars?

A week is certainly a long time in this sport, we had the end of the jumps in Ireland with the Punchestown Festival finishing for another year and it was over to Newmarket for Guineas weekend, before heading to the Chester May Festival.

It has been another brilliant week for Aidan O’Brien on the Roodee, winning both Derby trials, the Cheshire Oaks and the Ormonde Stakes. Lambourn’s Huxley Stakes win means for the first time, they have won all five Pattern races over the three days.

It was brilliant to hear Paul Smith from the Coolmore team talk about how these trials are so important and how they essentially put everything into a pot after the races and then make their plans. It will be fascinating to see where certain horses go next.

I take a look at the formidable team that will be under discussion at Ballydoyle following a sensational week.

Gstaad - 2nd in the 2000 Guineas, Newmarket

Gstaad was supplemented for the 2000 Guineas after a reported administrative error and he was sent off 3-1 joint- favourite for the race, finishing second to the brilliant Bow Echo, trained by George Boughey and ridden by Billy Loughnane.

Gstaad will be brought back to the Curragh for the Irish 2,000 Guineas.

Once again, he's another lovely horse going forward. He was an impressive winner in Del Mar last year at the Breeders' Cup.

True Love and Precise - 1st and 7th in the 1000 Guineas, Newmarket

On Sunday, we saw the return of the Filly's Mile winner, Precise, as she finished seventh in the 1,000 Guineas.

There were a couple of hiccups in her preparation before the race, where she had a temperature, so they couldn't be at full work with her, and her stablemate True Love, who won the Group 1 Cheveley Park last year, did what all good stablemates do and bounded out and won for connections under a brilliant Wayne Lorden ride.

Again, she looks like a filly that could go back to the Irish 1,000 Guineas now and try to become another dual Guineas winner for the master of Ballydoyle.

For Precise it looks like a potential eye on the Oaks could be possible but with the size of the stable and with other horses coming out and impressing these plans can all change.

Amelia Earhart - 1st in the Cheshire Oaks, Chester

We started off the week with the filly Amelia Earhart, who has supposedly been impressing quite a bit since her return, and it was always going to be interesting to see how she got on against the John Gosden-trained I'm the One.

She wore blinkers and a hood, which is a very interesting thing for a horse to do. Last year, it was questioned on a couple of occasions about her attitude and the fact that she'd almost park up when she got near the front. So I suppose this is a way of combating it, that she can't see what's behind her and it just makes her concentrate on the job a bit more.

But under a perfectly timed and delivered Ryan Moore ride in the Cheshire Oaks, she delivered and she looks extremely exciting for the future.

It's no surprise that she has gone into clear favouritism for the Epsom Oaks at the beginning of June. She is a daughter of Camelot, a big, beautiful filly with a lovely action, and I just loved the performance.

She settled brilliantly throughout, and it was just really easy on the eye. I don't think Ryan Moore had a second's worry on her. She certainly is one now that can add her name into the Oaks folklore.

Benvenuto Cellini - 1st in the Chester Vase, Chester

In the very next race, we saw the return of Benvenuto Cellini, a beautiful son of Frankel out of Newspaperofrecord.

This horse was a Group 2 winner last season before finishing third in the Group 1 Futurity Stakes, but he always looked like the further he went, the better he would be, and it was no surprise to see him easily take out the Chester Vase during the week.

It was a dominant performance and he took the race by the scruff of the neck just as they turned for home and he was not for catching.

Maybe there will be some question marks about the horses in behind him, but he has shot right to the head of the Derby market and looks one that could be tailor-made for Epsom.

Constitution River - 1st in the Dee Stakes, Chester

As we moved on to day two, we were able to see the return of Constitution River in the Dee Stakes.

He won a Group 2 for Aidan O'Brien on the 23rd of August, and was making his comeback.

He has always been touted as a potential French Derby horse, but again, at short odds, he put in a really nice performance, which I think may have surprised connections slightly as to just how well he travelled and settled throughout.

Could he join his stablemate at the Derby is definitely up for discussion.

Jan Brueghel - 1st in the Ormonde Stakes, Chester

The return of Jan Brueghel, a horse who was not deemed to be sound enough to go to Australia, which confused a lot of people including myself, was another highlight.

He is just everything you want in a horse. He is tough, he's a son of Galileo, and he has no problem getting down and dirty in a race, always fighting under pressure.

It was no surprise to see Ryan Moore constantly pushing him along after a mile and a half, and he returned to action with a lovely display in the Ormonde Stakes, winning by two and a half lengths. It looks like it will be the Group 1 Coronation Cup at Epsom next, where he will look to retain his title from last year, and it is now a million-pound prize for first thanks to Coolmore sponsoring the race.

Lambourn - 1st in the Huxley Stakes, Chester

Dual Derby hero Lambourn made it a 100% record in Listed/Group races in the week for the team as he got back on track in the Group 2 Huxley Stakes.

He was quite disappointing after his Irish Derby win at the Curragh, as he seemed to lose his form thereafter.

First-time cheekpieces were applied and it definitely seemed to spark some more interest in his performance today. He may join stable mate Jan Brueghel in the Coronation Cup.

Ones to watch this weekend

O’Brien has a couple more horses on the Derby trial path this weekend, with Pierre Bonnard running in Leopardstown.

We also have the likes of Puerto Rico, who is running in the French 2,000 Guineas at Longchamp on Sunday.

Diamond Necklace also makes her reappearance on the same card in France as she looks for another Group 1 victory in the 1000 Guineas, she was a facile winner of the Marcel Boussac and she really could be anything so it will definitely be fascinating to see where this filly will end up.
