Trainer Ger Lyons gained quick compensation following defeat in the Curragh’s Airlie Stud Stakes today with a somewhat unlikely success in the Group 3 Jebel Ali Racecourse Anglesey Stakes, through speculative entrant Suzie Songs (7/2).

Lyons and stable jockey Colin Keane were defeated in the 35-minutes earlier Group 2 Airlie Stud Stakes with Lady Iman by Ballydoyle’s Beautify but the tables were turned with Suzie Songs which defeated Ballydoyle’s Flushing Meadows (2/9f).

A debut Cork maiden winner 15 days ago, Moyglare Stud-owned-and-bred filly Suzie Songs chased leader Flushing Meadows and edged past that rival in the final furlong, to score by a short-head.

Suzie Songs was one of two fillies in today's five-runner race and Lyons revealed “it was a last minute decision to run her but the beautiful thing about training for Moyglare, is you are allowed to do that and there are no set plans. I’m blessed with owners like that, I wake up and can change my mind and do whatever.

“Today’s race wasn’t the plan and she hasn’t worked since Cork but we were watching entries so I just threw her in. I thought it got to her today, so we’ll give her a wee break and come back for the sponsors race, the Moyglare (Stakes Group 1, September): it’s a race I’d love to put on the CV. We’ve a horse who ran well last night (Justiciar) and this filly, so have a nice bunch of horses heading that route.

“Colin said in Cork that Suzie Songs wanted further and sticking to the original plan, her next race would have been over seven (furlongs) but this presented itself during the week with few entries, so here we are.”

Regarding the earlier defeat of Lady Iman, Lyons added “it was trainer error. It was a proper horserace and the best horse (Beautify) won: she will go forward in trip and I’ll (with Lady Iman) drop back in trip.

“In defence of the best jockey in Ireland (Keane), he’s been telling me for quite a while that Lady Iman is a five furlong horse but I just refused to listen to him. She just got outstayed today but she’s a proper horse and owes us nothing.

“It would have been lovely to tick the Group 2 box but we’ll go back now and look for the fives (furlong races).”
