Amateur rider Crawford retires Stephen Crawford has called time on his riding career following Sligo on Monday, where the amateur jockey steered Carnspindle to a fourth placed finish in the concluding bumper. Crawford intends assisting his trainer brother Stuart Crawford in their yard at Larne and will also continue to buy and sell young jumpers. Crawford, who failed by one winner to tie the 2013/14 British Amateur Jockeys Championship, said “I've been busy the past five years breaking and training young horses and to be honest, the race-riding came in the way towards the end. “I had my last ride on my own Carnspindle (finished fourth on debut) at Sligo on Monday and hopefully she'll be sold at Tattersalls Ascot on May 31. I'll continue buying and selling three and four year olds and will have five or six of my own at any one time.” Crawford was Fegentri Champion in 2012 and also rode winners of the Aintree Mares Bumper and Irish Cambridgeshire, as an apprentice.
