Baroud caused a surprise when striking late to deny the well-backed favourite Daryzan in the Group Two Prix Guillaume d’Ornano at Deauville.

Aidan O’Brien’s French Derby third Montreal made the early running as Francis-Henri Graffard’s 11-10 favourite Daryzan raced on the rail in midfield.

As they turned for home Daryzan was asked for an effort and darted through a gap on the inside but it was the Andre and Lavinia Fabre-trained Baroud who was travelling best of all when switched to the outside by Pierre-Charles Boudot.

The Frankel colt hit the front the a furlong out and won by two lengths going away from Daryzan as Montreal weakened to finish fourth of the five runners.

Next-Year Focus Following Deauville Triumph

Teddy Grimthorpe, racing manager to owner Imad Al Sagar, said: “He’s been a slow maturing horse but he’s run better and better and improved again when he ran at Saint-Cloud.

“He went well in his last piece of work on Tuesday which was really encouraging.

“As a Group Two winner by Frankel he is something special and the options are becoming more rarified. So we will focus on next year and as he loves the fast ground it probably won’t be Longchamp.”

Deauville Supporting Card Double

Charlie Appleby ’s Hassaleh made a seemless step up to a mile, winning the Group Three Darley Prix de Lieurey in the hands of Christophe Lemaire.

The three-year-old was striking at Group level for the first time and was held up at the back of the field before making headway to lead a furlong and a half out and running on nicely to beat Brian Meehan’s Esna by a length. Wimbledon Hawkeye reversed the Royal Ascot form with Map Of Stars to win for the first time since transferring to George Scott in the Prix Gontaut-Biron Hong Kong Jockey Club.

The Kameko colt was beaten only half a length by Map Of Stars in the Wolferton Stakes and was then bought by Victorious Racing in July.

He was a half-length third on stable debut in a Group One in Germany last month but made no mistake in France, laying down his challenge with half a furlong to go and holding off Map Of Stars by a neck in a duel to the line.
