Irish jockey Sammy Jo Bell rode her first winner since returning from injury when Cullingworth displayed admirable tenacity to claim the Royal Mile at Musselburgh.

The highly-rated apprentice had to spend several weeks in a wheelchair after she underwent a pelvic operation following a heavy fall at Carlisle last May.

After a lengthy rehabilitation, Bell finally returned to competitive action at the start of last month.

Cullingworth, one of four runners in the race for trainer Richard Fahey, was a 16-1 shot on his first start since September.

The three-year-old hit the front inside the final furlong and while Grey Britain looked a serious threat close home, Cullingworth saw him off by a head.

Bell said: "The first winner is probably the most important, really. I've not had many rides since I've come back.

"Sometimes you ride and then it's a week until your next one, so you keep feeling like you're starting again.

"You don't ride with as much confidence as you would if you are banging in winners every day of the week.

"Richard has been very good to me and I'm delighted that he's given me a chance. It's absolutely fantastic.

"This winner is quite special."
