Colin Bowe is to give Shantou Flyer a short break before preparing him for a shot at the National Hunt Chase at next year's Cheltenham Festival.

The Kiltealy handler is eager to have a crack at the four-mile amateur contest with the five-year-old after he toughed out victory in a novice chase at the track on Friday.

With the son of Shantou having had eight races since the end of April, Bowe is keen to ensure the improving chaser is given time off in order for him to be at his best come March.

He said: "Shantou Flyer has come home sound. He did it well, as I thought coming to two out he wasn't going to win, but he is improving all the time.

"We brought him over to see if he handled the track and he stayed on up the hill well. We will give him a break of about a month, as he has been on the go for a long time.

"He will then come back around Christmas or January time be prepared for the four-miler at the Festival. He should have no problems with that trip."
