Donnacha O’Brien saddled South Island to win the opener at the Curragh yesterday and afterwards gave his reflections on Havana Anna's fine second under regular rider Gavin Ryan in the Cheveley Park Stakes on Saturday.

A Listed winner at Naas in July and runner-up in the Group 3 Prix D'Arenberg at Longchamp in late August, the daughter of Havana Grey finished a three-parts of a length second to the Aidan O'Brien-trained favourite True Love in the prestigious Group 1 at Newmarket.

"She ran a belter and did everything right bar win. Dad’s filly just stayed the last uphill furlong a little bit better," said O'Brien.

“She seems to go on any ground. It was plenty soft in France and I suppose that was a career best at Newmarket on good to firm, so I’d have no ground concerns either way.

“We might have a look at the five-furlong juvenile race at the Breeders Cup.”

O'Brien also had news of his Athasi Stakes winner Atsila who, on her most recent outing, was third in the Matron Stakes at Leopardstown on Irish Champions Weekend.

The Phoenix Of Spain filly holds an engagement in the Sun Chariot Stakes at Newmarket on Saturday and her trainer commented: “She might run and is working towards there.

“We’ll see what is going to turn up and what the ground is going to be but there is a good chance she will run.”
