Jack Hobbs' abysmal display in the Jockey Club Stakes at Newmarket on Saturday remains a mystery 24 hours later.

However, connections of Godolphin's colt will continue to investigate why last year's Irish Derby winner ran so badly on his seasonal debut.

The John Gosden-trained four-year-old was never travelling with any fluency, was quickly beaten and pulled up over a furlong from home by William Buick in the Group Two contest, won by Exosphere.

"Following Jack Hobbs' run at Newmarket yesterday, John Gosden has confirmed that there was no obvious cause for his disappointing performance," Godolphin's chief executive and racing manager John Ferguson said.

"I know that John will leave no stone unturned and extensive tests will be carried out in the next few days."

Gosden confirmed Jack Hobbs was to undergo a series of tests to attempt to get to the root of the problem.

"He's fine this morning and he's eaten up," he said.

"We're going to run a whole series of tests as we're having to deal with something unusual.

"Coming into the race I was thrilled with his work. He's never shown anything like this in his life and it is a bit of a bolt from the blue."
