Trumpet Major was a decisive winner of the Novae Bloodstock Insurance Craven Stakes at Newmarket on Thursday.

The Arakan (stands with Joe Foley at Ballyhane Stud and he is also the sire of recent dual winner Brog Deas) colt took the race by the scruff of the neck entering The Dip when he took two lengths out of the field and from then on the result was not in doubt.

Trainer Richard Hannon saddled the first two home as Crius ran well in second, while Eastern Sun ran a good race in third considering he spent muc of the contest alone up the centre of the track.

Assistant trainer Richard Hannon-junior said: "He did it very well with a three pound penalty. For a minute I thought he was going to run a horrible race and I wasn't sure he'd handle the ground but Ryan got after him and he did it very well.

"We'll have to take our chance in the Guineas after that. He'd have needed the race and only had one racecourse gallop about ten days ago and there will be improvement in him.

"Crius ran a good race, he just gallops and we'll probably sidestep the English Guineas with him and tiptoe around Europe."
