A trip to Ireland for the Gain Horse Feeds Irish St. Leger at the Curragh on September 15 remains the likely next port of call for Brown Panther following his creditable performance at Newbury last weekend.

The four-year-old appeared to have every chance of getting back on the winning trail in the Geoffrey Freer Stakes having performed well in the King George at Ascot, but he was ultimately well held in second by the impressive Mount Athos.

Brown Panther may be more effective back on an easier surface, but trainer Tom Dascombe is not making excuses for his recent reverse.

"He's come out of the race fine. We could come up with all the excuses in the world and blame the ground and what have you, but the fact is he was beaten by a better horse on that particular day," said Dascombe.

"He still ran a good race and I think we'll probably still look that way (Irish St Leger).

"I think he'd still have a chance, even though he was beaten the other day."
