Damoso continues fine recent run for Torrens Jockey Simon Torrens rode his fourth winner in a fortnight when getting up close home aboard Damoso to take Division l of the On-Course Bookmakers Handicap Hurdle at Ballinrobe. Dropped out towards rear in the early stages of the race, the Philip Rothwell trained gelding began to creep closer as the final circuit unfolded. Despite an untidy jump, the four-year-old moved third after jumping the penultimate flight, before going second in pursuit of the leader Georginas Jet after jumping the last. Gradually getting to the latter on the run-in, Damoso led over 50 yards out, keeping on well to score by two-and-a-half lengths. “I thought he ran a nice race the last day. I’d say he’s probably still learning plenty,” said Torrens. “He was probably a bit babyish there still. I was hoping again for another good run, I didn’t expect him to go and win but thought he should be in the shake-up as it didn’t look a great race on paper. “When I grabbed a hold of him from the back of the last in fairness he’s ground it out well. “John Ryan’s went a good gallop and I thought with a circuit to go we stepped on the gas plenty early. “I was kind of struggling to go with them and I’d say that’s probably why I made the mistake. I’d say it did me no harm as it meant I was able to save a bit. “It probably wasn’t the strongest race on paper but he’s got his head in front and if he could improve again it would be great.” Additional reporting by Gary Carson.
