Death of George Mernagh

The death has occurred of Tattersalls Ireland Managing Director George Mernagh following a long illness. He was 56.

Mernagh enjoyed a distinguished career as a National Hunt jockey in the 1980's with notable big race success in the Midlands Grand National on Knock Hill, a Peterborough Chase aboard Townley Stone and he also landed the Tattersalls Mares Only Novices' Chase Final at Aintree on Auntie Dot.

He joined Tattersalls Ireland as a bloodstock manager in 1989, and ten years later was appointed to the company board. He was subsequently appointed as managing director in July 2007.

Mernagh was also a member of the National Hunt Committee and an acting steward with the Turf Club.
