Desert to bypass Lockinge

Mark Johnston today ruled Desert Deer out of Saturday`s one-mile Juddmonte Lockinge Stakes at Newbury.

He may now consider races over longer distances for the four-year-old, who returned from a long lay-off to win a conditions event at Newmarket on 2000 Guineas day.

'He is not going to run,' the trainer said. 'There were two question-marks _ the trip and the ground.

'And I think it is a tough Group One _ it looks a hot race to me.

'We will wait for a bit and probably go for a race over a mile and a quarter. We have waited a long time with him so it is no problem to wait a bit more.'

Desert Deer had singled himself a horse to follow when trotting up by nine lengths at Newmarket over 10 furlongs on his seasonal reappearance.
