It looked far from likely deep into the race, but Santo Sospir (4/1) got up in the shadow of the post in the bumper at Punchestown.

He appeared to be toiling in third inside the final furlong, and was matched at the maximum of 999/1 on Betfair, as The Wager was striding his way to victory.

The leader was matched at 1.01 in-running and doubtless backers thought he was in, however, there was a major upset.

Santo Sospir got his second win and ran on very strongly to nail The Wager (9/4) by a neck in this race that featured six newcomers.

Santo Sospir brought up a double for Gordon Elliott after Familiar Dreams took race three.

He said: “He was green. We said we’d run him to get a run into him.

“He’ll be a grand horse to come back for the Goffs Defender Bumper. We said we’d give him a run to give him an education and that’s where we’ll go now.

“He galloped. He’s probably more of a hurdle horse, he’s not a big massive horse.”
