Trainer Pat Fahy believes the future is bright for Western Boy after he signed off his season with a decent run in defeat at the Punchestown Festival.

After making a winning debut over hurdles at Leopardstown over Christmas, the five-year-old made subsequent Supreme Novices' Hurdle winner Vautour pull out all the stops at Punchestown in January.

He was well beaten but not disgraced behind the same horse at Cheltenham and ran a similar race when fifth behind Vautour's stable companion Faugheen in the Herald Champion Novice Hurdle a fortnight ago.

Fahy said: "I was happy with him in Punchestown and I thought he jumped well. Davy (Russell) said trying to win the race probably cost him second on the day, but he wasn't beaten far.

"He was just behind a couple of very good horses, but the winner is a different class. He just looks an unbelievable horse.

"Our lad is only a five-year-old and has only had the four runs over hurdles, so I think we'll have another season hurdling with him.

"We've tried him at a high level this year, so I think next season we'll just try and find as many winnable races as we can and maybe just pitch him in better company once or twice.

"He came out of Punchestown well and the Galway Hurdle was tempting, but we decided to give him a break and we'll look forward to next season."
