Fontwell and Musselburgh beat the freeze

Today's two turf meetings in Britain at Fontwell and Musselburgh have been passed fit for racing.

Fontwell Clerk of the course Edward Arkell called an inspection for 8am due to the possibility of frost overnight and, while temperatures dipped below freezing, he is happy to give the card the green light.

'We've passed an inspection and we got down to just below minus one and a half overnight,' said Arkell.

'The frost covers we had down have done their job brilliantly so we are fine to go ahead.'

Nobody will be happier than Tony McCoy who has two rides on the card, both of which will need to be successful if he is to secure the 3,000th winner of his National Hunt career.

This afternoon's meeting at Musselburgh has been given the green light after temperatures stayed above freezing overnight at the Scottish venue.

Clerk of the course Anthea Morshead had called an inspection for 7am due to the possibility of frost overnight but was delighted to give the card the go-ahead first thing this morning.

'We looked at it ourselves this morning and there was no point bringing the steward in as there was no frost,' said Morshead.

'We've got some nice cloud cover now so there shouldn't be any frost with the daylight either and thankfully racing goes ahead. It would have been awful to have lost this meeting as it really is a cracking card.'
