Former Turf Club CEO Cahir O'Sullivan dies aged 86

The death has occurred of former Turf Club supremo Cahir O'Sullivan. He was 86.

O'Sullivan held the post of 'Keeper Of The Matchbook' or Chief Executive at the Turf Club, now known as the Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board (IHRB), from 1976 until 1999 when he was succeeded by Brian Kavanagh.

A native of County Louth, he qualified as an accountant and was managing director of a small manufacturing firm in Newcastle West, County Limerick before taking over at the Turf Club at the age of 41.

O'Sullivan was a real racing enthusiast and found his vocation in the Turf Club post with many significant developments in his time including the Budweiser sponsorship of the Irish Derby and the introduction of portable starting stalls.

He was appointed a member of the Irish National Hunt Steeplechase Committee in 2002 and subsequently acted as a steward for many years.

Cahir was pre-deceased by his adored wife Gretta, and will be sadly missed by their daughters Jean and Yvonne, sons Richard and Gordon plus extended family and many friends.

Funeral arrangements are as follows:

Reposing at his home in Moore Park, Newbridge, Co. Kildare on Thursday from 4pm with prayers at 7pm (for family and close friends).

Removal on Friday morning at 10.30am to arrive at St. Conleth's Parish Church for Mass at 11am. The Funeral Mass will be live streamed on https://newbridgeparish.ie/parish-church. Funeral afterwards to St. Conleth's Cemetery, Newbridge.

Family flowers only and any donations, if desired, to be made to St Vincent de Paul (Donations box in the Church).
