GAA weekend bets: Three tips for the Munster and Leinster hurling Championships

The GAA's focus this weekend is very much invested in the provincial deciders in the Munster and Leinster hurling Championships.

Munster foes Limerick and Cork square off in the Gaelic Grounds on Saturday evening, while Croke Park hosts Kilkenny versus Galway on Sunday afternoon for the Leinster showpiece.

There's Tailteann Cup action for the footballers across the weekend too, but the hurling finals really do stand out as the only show in town.

The Munster hurling final is a showpiece almost unmatched in Irish sport and on Saturday evening the Gaelic Grounds in Limerick will be a flurry of colour and noise as John Kiely's Treaty side host neighbours Cork in the provincial decider.

Limerick and Cork are still operating by the home and away arrangement for Munster finals which pre-dates the current round robin structure and it surely gives the 'home' side a key advantage.

Under Kiely, Limerick have become the standard-bearers for the game. They are targeting an extraordinary seven in a row in Munster, having moved on from last summer's failure to win a fifth consecutive All-Ireland title.

Their hopes were ended, of course, by Cork at the semi-final stage last July in Croke Park and the Leesiders were much-touted this season after ending a 27-year wait for an Allianz League crown in the spring.

But when they ventured to the Gaelic Grounds last month, it was the Rebels that walked into an ambush as Limerick dished out a vengeful 16-point mauling, thus issuing the sternest of rebukes to the side that had stemmed their tide a year ago.

At the same venue, with largely the same personnel on show, it's hard to envisage how Cork will turn that around now. There is of course the prospect that these sides will meet a third time, back in Croke Park in the All-Ireland series.

That might be Cork's big chance, again, and for now Limerick should continue their Munster dominance with something to spare.

Aaron Gillane, Hurler of the Year in 2023, sparkled in last month's win for Limerick with his early goal amongst the highlights of the season so far.

The Patrickswell sharpshooter is perhaps still underestimated in some quarters and he can fire into the Cork net against on Munster final day.

    Goals key for the Cats

Kilkenny scored 14 goals in four Leinster Championship outings as they booked a place in this final with a game to spare.

Derek Lyng's side started out in Nowlan Park in April with a 12-point win over Galway, scoring 3-24, and they have also rattled the net four times against Offaly and five against Dublin.

Last time out, Micheál Donoghue and his Galway side were involved in a de-facto provincial semi-final against Dublin in Parnell Park, which they won with more ease than the five-point margin perhaps suggested.

That they allowed Dubs to find the net three times is a worry. If Kilkenny are allowed a similar pathway to success, Croke Park could become a bloodbath for the Tribesmen, who have failed to win any of their last five Championship meetings with Kilkenny.

With veteran TJ Reid in flying form and a chance to win their sixth straight Leinster final, Kilkenny are likely to get over the line with something to spare, as they did a year ago when feasting on Donoghue-led Dublin's shortcomings in a 16-point provincial final win.

They have been here before with a team led by Donoghue and can inflict more pain on the Galway boss now back in his native county.
