The All-Ireland Senior Football Championship has reached the quarter-final stage and this weekend sees four mouthwatering knockout ties at Croke Park as the contenders for Sam Maguire are whittled down to four.

Headquarters will stage double-headers on both Saturday and Sunday. Donegal and Monaghan renew acquaintances in the opener on Saturday before Dublin face Tyrone.

On Sunday, surprise package Meath stare down Galway before the All-Ireland champions Armagh go up against Kerry in the jewel of the four contests on paper.

Donegal and Monaghan meet for the second time in this year's Championship in the opening quarter-final on Saturday afternoon.

The Ulster champions are less than pleased about facing a six-day turnaround but, in truth, they were rarely out of second gear in beating Louth last weekend and should be ready to roll.

When these sides met in Clones in the Ulster quarter-final Donegal led from the fifth minute onwards. They were six clear at half-time, should have been out of sight, but were left sweating late on after Gabriel Bannigan's side kicked four two-pointers in a resurgent second half to lose only by two.

It has been a trait for Donegal this term to allow teams to recover, Derry and notably Armagh did it in the provincial series after Jim McGuinness' side established healthy leads.

Monaghan engaged in a high-scoring shootout as they overcame Down to get to this stage, but a similar approach against Donegal could be problematic with the running power they possess.

Red Hands to come up short

Tyrone vs Dublin is the second of Saturday's games and is expected to be a close run thing on paper.

Dessie Farrell's Dubs haven't managed to put together a truly convincing 70-minute performance just yet, their win over Galway in Salthill the standout.

Against Armagh their wayward shooting and silly rules infringements saw them heavily punished and last week they made heavy work of putting away Cork in what Farrell labelled a 'dogfight'.

Farrell revealed Dublin took a gamble by not bringing captain Con O'Callaghan off the bench for the closing stages of that contest, as they held the Cuala forward in reserve with this weekend in mind.

It paid off and if O'Callaghan is ready to go his presence is a massive boost.

Tyrone have flattered to deceive too. Their big moment was the win over Donegal in Ballybofey - a contest played in attritional conditions - but they immediately fluffed their lines in a home reverse against Mayo afterwards.

Malachy O'Rourke needs to get more from his team here. The Red Hands were seven-point winners when these teams met in the Allianz League in Omagh in March, but this test in Croke Park will be very different and the Dubs are fancied to take some stopping with King Con on his throne at HQ.

Kingdom come to raid the Orchard

All-Ireland champions Armagh face Kerry in a truly mouthwatering tussle on Sunday afternoon.

Kieran McGeeney's side look stronger this season, with Jarly Óg Burns having a telling impact and Oisin Conaty stepping up, while the belated return of Rian O'Neill has been a major injection to their cause.

That said, they failed again to win the Ulster title and, while perhaps their minds were elsewhere, allowed Galway recover from nine points behind to stay in the Championship in their meeting at Breffni Park earlier this month.

Dublin dominated them for 20 minutes in Croke Park before that but poor shooting and a lack of discipline betrayed them and Armagh turned it on to win. They are merited favourites here but Kerry could sting them.

The attacking instincts of Paudie Clifford and Seanie O'Shea could click at any moment, while David Clifford hit 3-07 against Cavan last weekend and could have had more.

Jack O'Connor's side have injury worries over the likes of Mike Breen, Paul Geaney, Tony Brosnan and Diarmuid O'Connor, but this should be a blockbuster and, priced at 6/4, Kerry are being underestimated.
