Heavy Metal kept on gamely to land the Audi Richmond Stakes at Glorious Goodwood on Thursday.

Mark Johnston's marvellous week continued as he saddled yet another winner in the six furlong Group Two contest.

Runner-up in the Woodcote Stakes at the Derby meeting in June, the son of Exceed And Excel had since finished down the field in the Coventry and last of seven in the July Stakes.

However, the two year old bounced right back to form under a positive ride from Joe Fanning and, despite being on the pace throughout, had enough in the locker to repel the late challenge of Master Of War to deny Richard Hannon a fifth consecutive winner in the race.

Ahern, a hot-favourite on the back of his close third in the July Stakes, broke well but was reigned back to the rear of the field by Jamie Spencer and rarely looked like improving upon his position.

There was better news for his owners, Qatar Racing Limited, as their other runner, Cay Verde, finished third.
