HRI Increases Support for RACE Training Programmes Horse Racing Ireland has approved a 50% increase in funding for the Racing Academy & Centre of Education (RACE), with its annual grant rising from ?300k to ?450k this year. The lion's share of this additional funding is earmarked for the introduction and promotion of new training courses to meet the needs of the Irish horseracing industry. RACE Director Keith Rowe said: 'This increased support from HRI is recognition of the good work done at RACE over the years and will help us to offer new and relevant training to the broader industry sectors in a flexible and economical way. We need to develop career structures within racing if we are to continue to attract and retain young people within the industry. This is essential if Irish racing is to protect its indigenous skills base and continue to compete successfully on the international stage'. RACE is developing a new six-month training programme for grooms and stable staff, skills development courses for existing employees and enhanced support services for jockeys. The FAS supported grooms course, due to commence in November, is aimed at young people looking to work in the racing industry other than as jockeys. It will offer certified skills and professional training validated by an industry steering group. Participants will receive practical instruction in stable management and exercise riding, health & safety, first aid, computers and personal development. They will then be assigned to trainers' yards around the country for workplace skills development. HRI Chief Executive, Brian Kavanagh said: 'We are delighted to provide additional support for RACE which is providing a vital service to Irish racing. We place a strong emphasis on the training and educational needs of those employed in the industry and encourage best practice in relation to terms and conditions of employment and the development of proper career structures'.
