Hurling for Cancer Research fundraiser Horse racing stars are slipping out of the saddle and swapping their reins for a hurl as they prepare to join Ireland’s GAA stars for a hurling match with a difference at St Conleth’s Park, Newbridge on August 9th at 6.30pm. For the fifth year in-a-row leading trainer Jim Bolger and jockey Davy Russell will bring household names in GAA and horse racing together to take part in Hurling for Cancer Research, a celebrity hurling match in aid of the Irish Cancer Society. To date the event has raised €400,000 to help fund innovative cancer research projects in Ireland and the aim is to raise a further €100,000 this year. Kilkenny’s Brian Cody will manage Davy Russell’s side, while former Wexford manager, Liam Griffin, will be coaching Jim Bolger’s team for an almighty clash of the ash. Holder of ten All Ireland medals, Henry Shefflin, will be joined on the pitch by former Ireland striker Niall Quinn, Irish Sportswoman of the Year Katie Walsh, and a plethora of well-known jockeys and GAA stars including T.J. Ryan, JJ Delaney, DJ Carey, Ursula Jacob, Kevin Manning, Michael J. Kinane and Colm O’Rourke. The iconic Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh will serve as craoltoir on the day, former Galway Manager Cyril Farrell will keep both sides in check as referee, while Hector O'hEochagain will act as linesman.
